Approaching the island by ferry, the city of Adamas precedes you. The port on this island may not be its famous “Chora”, but it wins you over at first glance. White houses and dry landscape will immediately make you think "I am definitely in Cyclades".
If anything is widely known about Milos is its lacy beaches. Due to the volcanic origin of its soils, Milos differs from the rest of the Cycladic islands, as here you will find no forests or dense vegetation, nor running water and rivers. However, the same morphology that deprives the island of the above, is the same that gives the unique lunar landscapes and beaches with spectacular morphology and variety.
Several of the Milos’s beaches are featured in the international media for their unique beauty. Over 75 in number, small or larger, organized or wilder, all full of colors, will amaze you. Below we introduce you some of them:
Sarakiniko: Landing on a small beach with bright white rocks, an unearthly lunar landscape unfolds before you. This is a beach that, as its name suggests, was used by pirates for shelter. Testimony of its history
Tip 1: Try a walk on the beach at night with a full moon. You would think you went to the moon!
Tip 2: On this beach, among the white rocks lies a shipwreck, the so-called tanker "Africa". On the way from Eleusis to Egypt, it remained unmanned on the shores of Hydra, from where it was swept away by a storm to the Sarakiniko of Milos. There the ship was broken in two pieces. Fortunately, there were no casualties, as due to the immediate intervention of the authorities the sailors of the ship were all saved.
Firiplaka: Located on the south side of the island. Probably one of the most beautiful and largest beaches of Milos island. To get there you must go down a dirt road, but the clear blue waters, the white sand and the small rocky bays will make up for it. It is organized with sunbeds, pillows and umbrellas.
Tsigrado: If you decide to go down the dirt road to Firiplaka, instead of going right to Firiplaka, turn left to reach the also magical Tsigrado. You should carry the essentials as it is a non-organized beach and you have to go down the hillside on foot in order to reach. For the adventurous, there is the option of climbing down from the high rocks with a rope and then going down some stairs. Wild high cliffs, white sand and clear blue waters.
Kleftiko: Also known as "Thalassina Meteora", it has a worldwide reputation and is a highly photographed beach. Impressive volcanic white rocks in the sea, clear blue waters and beautiful caves. A miracle of nature. The beach is non-organized and the access here is exclusively by sea. Other beaches of the island that are accessible only by sea are Gerakas and Sykia.
Tip: Do not miss the hot springs that you will find there, still mentioned by Hippocrates.
Paleochori: The landscape here looks like a painting: organized, popular beach, surrounded by colorful rocks.! It has small pebbles and crystal-clear deep waters. There are hot springs in the area to swim in warm waters too.
Provatas: Large sandy beach with shallow waters and golden red sand. Around the beach there are options for you who yearn for food or drink, as the seaside settlement is highly developed waiting to serve your needs.
Sulfur mines: It has sand and colored pebbles. The stone buildings around the old sulfur mines take you back in time.
Papafrangas: Creeks, caves, cliffs, a uniquely wild landscape. The sea penetrates the small sandy beach and swimming here is a special experience. Due to the difficult access from the land, which requires attention since you have to go down a steep cliff, we recommend the approach by boat.
Agia Kyriaki: Organized beach with coarse sand and white pebbles on the south side of the island.
Clam Lake: It got its name from the lake in the area that is full of clams. This beach is divided into two beaches, a more peaceful and a more organized. In the second you can enjoy water sports. Right next to the beach you will find the organized camping of Milos.
Papikinos: Huge and organized beach with tamarisk trees that offer natural shade. It has crystal clear shallow waters, ideal for family vacations.
Lagada: Organized and quiet beach with shallow waters. Located near the port of Adamas.
Mytakas: Sandy beach on the north side of the island, not organized.
Mandrakia: Clean, blue and crystal-clear waters, coarse sand and pebbles in this small beach located on the north side of the island. The picturesqueness of the homonymous settlement will impress you.
Tip: Due to the numerous beaches around Milos and the difficulty of choosing what to see first, we recommend trying the tour of the island by boat. In that way, you will see multiple beaches, many of which are inaccessible from the mainland and you will have the opportunity to dive in any place you find attractive for swimming!
In Adamas, the port of Milos, you will find many options for accommodation, food and entertainment. Built above Adamas, Plaka, the capital of the island is ideal for leisurely walks in the alleys and squares with all the surrounding shops to keep reminding you the Greek island feeling.
Visit the Archaeological Museum in Plaka to admire the exact copy of the famous statue “Aphrodite of Milos”. In addition to the indoor collections, you will see great exhibits in the open-air spaces. Also, the Folklore, the Naval and the Mining Museum highlight to the visitors the special identity of the island over the years.
One of the most important sights of Milos is the early Christian catacombs, the first large community cemetery dating back to the early Christian years. There you will see a labyrinthine complex and historical frescoes.
Admire the scattered ancient towers on the island, the most important are the White Tower, the Tower of Katevati and the Black Tower
Climb the Venetian Castle of Milos at the top of the hill of Profitis Ilias to admire the sunset. Around the castle you can visit several churches.
The Ancient Theater of Milos and the Ancient Settlement of Filakope worth a visit too.
The traditional fishing villages with the so called “sirmata” and the picturesque settlements of Milos will impress you. Visit Tripiti. It is built amphitheatrically on volcanic rocks full of holes and the view from the top will take your breath away. Here you will also see some old windmills. In Pollonia you will enjoy local delicacies in picturesque taverns. If you are in Milos on the 15th of August, do not miss the festival in the village of Zefiria.
After a day by the sea, you will also enjoy evening walks in two more traditional villages: discover Firopotamos and Emporios, both stand out for their beauty.
There are many places you can discover during your summer vacation on the island. We tried to choose and present you the best:
The noble Plaka: This is the capital of the island, which took its name from the flat slab on which the first houses were built. Here you will enjoy unique sunset images. If you seek one of the best places to enjoy this magical hour of day in Plaka go up to Panagia Korfiatissa or to the castle.
Adamas: The port of Adamas is the first sight you see when you arrive in Milos by boat. This settlement was first inhabited by Cretans from Sfakia. They quickly acclimatized and integrated with the locals and for this reason this settlement flourished. Contributing to worldwide history, as it played an important role during World War I and World War II, it is now considered one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean.
The picturesque Pollonia: Named by the god Apollo. From here you will find daily boat departures for Kimolos and it is also a springboard for excursions to Glaronissia.
The wonderful Empoureio: Here you will find the old iron mines and the Rivari lagoon. We suggest approaching the settlement with boat from Adamas due to a relatively difficult approach by road.
In Klima, below of Plaka, the colorful houses are waiting for you to admire them and of course to take many photos. In these typical two-storey houses in front of the sea, fishermen used to keep their boats in the past. A fairytale image. Also, here you will find the well-known early Christian catacombs, which are included in the list of the most remarkable in the world.
Other settlements in Milos are: Agios Konstantinos, Zefyria, Mandrakia, Paleochori, Skinopi, Triovasali, Tripiti, Fourkovouni, Firopotamos etc.
Milos is an island with many beaches, in many of which access from land is difficult to impossible. For this reason, you will find many boats and sailboats, conducting daily excursions making the tour of the island. You will find many options, either for organized excursions, or for renting a boat individually, for more private tours.
Tip: If you rent a boat for the tour of the island, do not forget to visit the settlement Klima with the colored wires. These white houses with the colored doors are called wires, under of which fishermen left their boats and above they lived with their families.
